AGING IN PLACE MODIFICATIONS: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
We believe that everyone should feel comfortable in their homes, especially as we age. Part of that is the concept of aging in place.
What is aging in place?
Aging in place refers to those who stay in their homes as they get older instead of moving to assisted living facilities. The way we use our homes changes as we get older, and certain actions and tasks become more difficult and time-consuming. Moving around your home and using the kitchen, bathroom, doors, etc. may become taxing or even dangerous. Luckily, contractors can help you remodel your home to make aging in place more comfortable and safe.
What are the benefits of aging in place?
The biggest perk of aging in place is the ability to maintain your independence. This autonomy contributes to overall quality of life. People who age in place also benefit from a consistent living environment, lower costs compared to assisted living care, and the ability to stay close to neighbors and their favorite parks, stores, and more.
Should you consider aging in place?
The best candidates for aging in place long-term fit these descriptors:
- Your home is able to be remodeled
- You have the financial means for tackling a remodeling project
- You prefer making your own decisions
- You have access to transportation (public and/or private)
- You feel most comfortable living without assistance
How do you renovate for aging in place?
The most common aging in place remodeling projects include installing grab bars and widening doorways, but there is a wide range of potential projects that can be customized for your needs. Other projects include:
- Installing easy-to-use hardware on doors, windows, and cabinetry
- Placing non-stick flooring
- Taking doors off cabinets for easy access to items
- Replacing steps with ramps
