9 THINGS YOU NEED TO DO WHEN MOVING INTO A NEW HOUSE
Have move-in day on your mind? If you’re planning to buy a home in the near future, it can be daunting to keep track of everything you need to do as you move in and in the first few days. Here are 9 key things to do shortly after moving into a new house:
1| CHANGE THE LOCKS
Of the things to do when you’re moving into a new house, this is the most important. Keep your family safe from intruders by changing the locks as quickly as possible.
2| CHECK FOR LEAKS
Look around plumbing, fixtures, bathtubs, and showers for any signs of water leakage. Leaks that go unnoticed could lead to costly water damage.
3| CLEAN EVERYTHING… TWICE
Even if the folks who lived in your home before were clean people, moving creates a lot of dirt. Wipe down windows, steam carpets, scour the insides of cabinets, and polish your hardwood.
4| CALL AN EXTERMINATOR
When it comes to pests, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Get in touch with an exterminator—they will be able to ensure your new home is free of creepy crawlies.
5| LOOK YOUR HOUSE UP
This is especially cool if you move into a historic home: look up your address online, at community libraries, or in government records. It may have a special history all its own.
6| REPLACE AIR FILTERS
New air filters will help your house smell new and prevent airborne illnesses and allergy symptoms.
7| HAVE A PLAN FOR PETS AND KIDS
On moving day, make sure you have a safe, out of the way place for kids and pets to stay. If kids are older, they may want to help you move!
8| GET YOUR ADDRESS CHANGED
Go to the nearest post office to change your mailing address or do it online so you don’t miss any important bills or confidential documents.
9| KNOW WHERE THE MAIN CIRCUIT BREAKER AND WATER SHUTOFF IS
Know where your circuit breaker is and how to operate it, as well as where the water shutoff is, just in case you blow a fuse vacuuming or burst a pipe on move-in day.
