HISTORY
Before being named Fitchburg, this area was known by names like Rome and Greenfield. According to local historians, the first settlers landed in the late 1830s to start a thriving wheat farming industry. Fitchburg’s first residents were Native Americans and settlers from Ireland, New England, New York, and Pennsylvania.
